Biography
Dr Derek (Rundong) Yan is an Assistant Professor in System Risk and Reliability Modelling at the University of Nottingham. He graduated from Imperial College London, UK in 2015 and awarded MEng degree by First Class. He completed a Ph.D. in Control and Reliability at Loughborough University in 2020. Subsequently, he became a postdoctoral research associate at Loughborough University on the EPSRC project 'A Resilience Modelling Framework for Improved Nuclear Safety'. In 2022, Derek was awarded the Doctoral Prize Fellowship at Loughborough University, which is a highly-competitive personal award for early-career academics to establish their own ambitious research agenda and to develop their skills as independent researchers. He was appointed as an Assistant Professor at the University of Nottingham in 2023.

Dr Yan is the module convenor for both the M3 Level 4 module, 'Integrated Systems Analysis (MMME4056 UNUK)' and the Aerospace Level 4 Module 'Systems Engineering (MMME4039 UNUK)'.
'Integrated Systems Analysis (MMME4056 UNUK)' covers topics aligned to the design, description and analysis of dynamically complex, integrated systems. The module is motivated by recognising that the processes and concerns associated with designing and validating systems are distinct from those connected with designing and validating components.
'Systems Engineering (MMME4039 UNUK)' presents a way of thinking about systems in general and a way of mapping the composition and integration of systems and of system components. It shows how projects are organised and managed in order to translate complex, diverse requirements into integrated, robust design solutions.
In addition, he supervises final-year student projects related to risk and reliability analysis of diverse engineering systems.

Derek's current research focuses on developing model-based systems engineering approaches to improve system safety, efficiency, and resilience, thereby reducing the production costs and operational risks, in various industrial sectors. Additional areas of interest involve risk and reliability assessment methods, asset management approaches and resilience engineering in a range of industrial sectors, including manufacturing, nuclear energy, offshore wind power, and other energy sectors.
