Biography

After having obtained a BSc in Physiology and Pharmacology at King's College London, I studied Veterinary Medicine (BVetMed) at The Royal Veterinary College, University of London and qualified as a Veterinary Surgeon in 1996. After four years in general practice I undertook residency training in small animal medicine and oncology at The University of Cambridge and obtained my RCVS Diploma in 2003 and my EBVS/ECVIM-CA Diploma in 2005. I then created and ran the internal medicine and medical oncology services at Dick White Referrals from 2004, becoming head of service and board member in 2007 and then Clinical Director from 2016 - 2021 and I have spend the majority of my professional life in clinical practice. In addition, I became an Associate Lecturer at The University of Nottingham in 2007, progressing to Associate Professor in 2011 and delivered all of the second and fourth year undergraduate endocrinology teaching from 2007 to 2016 and I was also the clinical rotation manager at Dick White Referrals from 2014 - 2021. I was fortunate enough to receive a University "Excellence in Clinical Teaching" award from the University of Nottingham in 2010. I became Professor of Practice (Small Animal Internal Medicine) in 2020 and currently I teach and assess on the post-graduate small animal advanced clinical practice programme. Away from Nottingham, I have lectured in the UK, Europe, the US and Mexico on many topics in the field of small animal internal medicine and I am also currently a consultant for Virtual Veterinary Specialists in the UK and an advisor for GekkoVet in Finland. I also co-authored a textbook on small animal oncology, published in 2010 ands subsequently translated into Spanish, Portugese and Japanese. My main research interest is the development of a gene therapy treatment for diabetes mellitus in the dog as part of a muliti-national collaboration and I was running a clinical trial in this area until Covid, but aim to re-start this work in 2024. Within the veterinary profession I was proud to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2019 due to meritorious contributions to clinical practice.
