Biography

Dr. Michael Craven is Principal Research Fellow at the University of Nottingham in the NIHR MindTech HealthTech Research Centre, based in the Institute of Mental Health on Jubilee Campus, specialising in technology research, design and evaluation in healthcare, currently focussed on mental health and dementia and more generally with medical devices and digital healthcare. He has over 30 years of research experience spanning healthcare, electronic engineering, computer science, health economics and is involved with several aspects of teaching & learning (lecturing, postgraduate supervision, course development). For details of grants and publications (50+ in MindTech) please visit https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5682-6360

Mike is a member of the Faculty of Engineering Human Factors Research Group (ITRC, University Park campus), the Centre for Dementia (IMH, Jubilee Campus), the Centre for Healthcare Equipment and Technology Adoption (CHEATA) (Clinical Engineering, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust), Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre mental health theme, Digital Health IRC, East Midlands Research into Aging Network (EMRAN) and the European dementia research network INTERDEM.org. Additionally, he is a trustee and co-director of the Trent Dementia charity based at the IMH.

Current MindTech projects include:

  • ORBIT-UK, Clinical translation and commercialisation of ORBIT (Online Remote Behavioural Intervention for Tics): creating a patient-ready product and business case for NHS adoption in the UK. NIHR i4i Product Development Award funded.
  • SlowMo2, digital intervention for people living with schizophrenia. Wellcome funded, with KCL.

  • Smartphone Apps for self-monitoring in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (SnappyApp & iRAM)
  • Gamification of ADHD public awareness on large touchscreens (Attention Grabber);
  • Evaluation of digital technology (websites and Apps) for mental health and well-being co-produced by young people (Innovation Labs evaluation for Comic Relief);
  • Evaluation of The Big White Wall online mental health portal implementation in Derbyshire.
  • Design and evaluation of technologies for older people with dementia and carers (CASA and KuPA);

Prior to joining MindTech he was in the MATCH programme at Nottingham researching methods and tools to ease the process of determining the value of healthcare technology innovations. There he worked closely with NHS innovation partners and medical device companies. Knowledge exchange activities included early stage health economic modelling and human factors methods to capture the needs of users (health professionals and/or patients) and delivery of training workshops with the support of Medilink organisations and the Knowledge Transfer Network. He also conducted Health Technology Assessments for the Centre for Evidence-based Purchasing (CEP), NICE and the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS). His current research interests are the following areas: self-monitoring of health (devices & Apps); games and simulation; information design in diagnostics and screening; evaluation of imaging and surgery navigation systems. Other research interests have included design of a variety of technologies: collaborative virtual environments; assistive & augmentative communication systems (gesture-based); microelectronics. Mike obtained a PhD (1994) and MSc (Modern Electronics, 1989) from the University of Nottingham and BSc (Physics, 1987) from the University of Bristol.

Future Research

I am developing research in the area of innovation and evaluation for healthcare technologies (medical devices and digital tools) for mental health and dementia care. I am currently interested in co-developing applications and evaluation methods for pervasive and ubiquitous computing in Healthcare (mHealth, such as mobile Apps). I am interested in gamification of healthcare technologies and applications of virtual reality and other consumer devices. I also wish to continue collaborations in the design and evaluation of surgical simulators and am open to discussion of developing past research areas.
