DavidGrant-410x273As we head towards the end of 2023 it is worth reflecting on the last couple of weeks when the world's nations gathered for COP28, with aims to reach agreement on action to protect our planet from disastrous climate change. Although the outcome recognised, for the first time, the need to to transition away from fossil fuels, it is not enough to keep global warming below a rise of 1.5˚C. Many feel the agreement reached did not go far enough, and developed nations need to invest more to transition away from fossil fuels whilst supporting geographically vulnerable countries.

The University of Nottingham Energy Institute has a part to play, both in the development of crucial technologies and energy innovations, and also in understanding how these will integrate into our daily lives and the changes we will need to make as individuals and communities to ensure success. The phenomenal engagement we received at the Midlands Energy Summit conveyed the regional commitment to global net-zero targets, and the strength of the relationships between industry and research.

It is more important than ever that we work together to innovate for a clean energy future, and I look forward to seeing what we achieve together in 2024 and beyond.

Merry Christmas.
