Biography
Ricardo Correia graduated in 2004 with a MEng in Instrumentation and Industrial Quality Engineering from the Superior Institute of Engineering of Porto. In 2005 he joined the Engineering Photonics group at Cranfield University to pursuit a PhD in the development of a fibre optic pore pressure sensor employing fibre Bragg Gratings. As a post-doctoral fellow in the Engineering Photonics he has further developed fibre optic sensors for civil and aerospace engineering applications. In 2015 he joined the Electrical and Electronics department - Optical and Photonics research group of the University of Nottingham where he is currently lecturing and performing research on the development of novel fibre optic sensors for healthcare applications.

Over my thirteen years of research experience in photonics, I have worked on a variety of projects that have provided me with in-depth knowledge and expertise in the development and practical deployment of fibre optic sensing devices for a range of applications, such as civil engineering, automotive and aerospace.

Current Research
My current research consists of the development of fibre optic sensors for healthcare applications. I am currently developing a fibre optic pressure sensor based on fibre Bragg gratings for measuring contact pressure on the cuff of endotracheal tubes used for the artificial ventilation in intensive care. I am also developing novel chemical sensors using long period gratings coated with chemical selective coatings.

My previous research focused on the development of fibre optic sensors for civil and mechanical engineering and aerospace applications.
