Dr Mount is the Academic Director of University of Nottingham Online - a key strategic investment for the institution aimed at achieving its goal of being a university without borders. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and his digital innovations in teaching and learning have been recognised through his receipt of two Lord Dearing Awards for 'an outstanding contribution to the development of teaching and student learning'. Previously Digital Learning Director for the Faculty of Social Sciences, Nick has authored several chapters and articles examining the use of digital and online technologies to support learning - from podcasts to virtual worlds.
Dr Mount is a member of Senate and several University-wide digital teaching and learning project boards, including the University's Educational Excellence Group.
Current Research
Dr Mount's work focuses on trans-disciplinary approaches to the understanding, analysis and management of hydrological and river systems. As the Water Lead for the £1.05 million Modelling and Analytics for a Sustainable Society Doctoral Training Centre , he has helped bring together mathematicians, scientists, engineers, and social scientists to find solutions to the pressing and inter-connected challenges of sustainable food, water and energy (https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/mathematics/prospective/research/mass/mass.aspx). He is also co-investigator on the £320,000 ESRC Newton-Caldas project 'Colombia River Stories: improving socio-environmental understandings for building sustainable peace' (www.chocoriverstories.org) - a project that integrates physical, social and political science within community action and participation to deliver an improved understanding of the role of river systems as agents of peace and conflict. Dr Mount currently sits on the International Advisory Panel for the Colombian Constitutional Court Ruling T-622 where he advises on the most appropriate river restoration approaches for the Atrato Basin - one of the first rivers in the world to have its bio-cultural recognised and protected.
There is also a strong, technical focus to Dr Mount's work in which his collaboration with computer scientists and engineers has revealed the extent to which novel machine learning and artificial intelligence methods are capable of delivering improved predictions of river and hydrological systems - both at the catchment and global scale. His work with the Inter-Sectoral Impact Model Inter-comparison Project (ww.isimip.org) has pioneered the use of 'intelligent algorithms' to improve the combined performance of global hydrology model predictions of climate change impacts on water availability: work that contributes to international research efforts to improve the quality and reliability of computer models upon which climate change impact projections are made.
Dr Mount supervises a team of PhD students examining aspects of hydrological and river systems at local, regional and global scales. His team is diverse and internationally-focussed, with its members coming to Nottingham from India, Nigeria, Kazakhstan, Iran and Colombia as well as the UK.
