Harvesting image data for healthy crops
My research is in computer vision and the application of machine learning to real-world problems. I focus on bioimage analysis, particularly plant phenotyping. Developing bigger, healthier plants that can grow in challenging environments is a pressing issue. I work with bioscientists to apply computer vision techniques to provide quick, accurate measurement of plants in 2D and 3D.
They use it to explain the underlying mechanisms of plant growth and data from my imaging approaches will inform plant breeding and genomic research, which in turn will have a huge impact on securing global food security. Novel imaging approaches I develop can also be used in medical image analysis.
Why Nottingham?
Nottingham is a world leader in plant phenotyping, with world-leading bio-imaging capabilities, including state-of-the-art ability at our Hounsfield Facility to takes images of plant roots as they grow in soil.
Working in a collaborative area offers the chance to address interesting problems with real-world impact. I work with renowned researchers from many domains, which ensures that my work is always engaging and rewarding. The Future Food Beacon also has a strong mentoring programme, which allowed me to establish myself as an independent researcher within the university.
