First Aid

Introduction

Employers have a legal duty to make arrangements to ensure their employees receive immediate attention if they are injured or taken ill at work. It doesn’t matter whether the injury or illness is caused by the work they do. What is important is that they receive immediate attention and that an ambulance is called in serious cases. First aid can save lives and prevent minor injuries becoming major ones. First aid at work covers the arrangements that need to be made to manage injuries or illness suffered at work.

In line with the First Aid at Work Regulations, the University Code of Practice PDF format for First Aid Provision contains guidance for Schools and Departments to assist them in establishing their first aid requirements in relation to the nature of their activities.

See First Aid Workspace for the current list of University First Aiders.

Summary of Actions Required by Schools/Departments

  1. Evaluate level of provision required taking into account activity, location and availability - record on assessment form MS Word Icon (Appendix 1 in University First Aid Code of Practice). Small, low risk Schools/Departments should notify any sharing arrangements in place or to be established. Schools/departments need to ensure that the assessed level of provision is achieved and maintained.
  2. Ensure adequate provision of first aid supplies, normally in the form of first aid boxes.
  3. Consider the requirement for specialist first aid provision, e.g. covering Cyanide work, Hydrofluoric Acid work, Fieldwork
  4. Publicise who the first aiders are in the local safety policy and by displaying notices (green and white).

Procedure for booking First Aid Training

First Aid Training (including refreshers) may be booked by members of staff at this link. The process is coordinated by the HR Central Administration Team. As part of the registration process, prospective delegates and their line managers must each complete the relevant E-form (see links in each course web page). (Ensure your SSO/DSO is aware in order that they can review first aider numbers for the School/Department.)
