Transport of Hazardous Substances/Dangerous Goods

The University has contracted the services of a Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser (DGSA) to provide advice and guidance on the carriage of dangerous goods by road, rail or air. Each School/Division involved in transporting dangerous goods should have nominated individuals to be the contact with the DGSA.

To access this service contact your School/Divisional Safety Officer.

Periodically the DGSA will deliver Dangerous goods awareness training – the Powerpoint presentation is available Powerpoint file.

The Safety Office has also issued a Code of Practice for the Transport of Potentially Dangerous Goods. This is split into the guidance document and the subsequent appendices (as below):

  • Code of Practice PDF format
    • Appendix 1 - UN Classification codes for dangerous goods PDF format
    • Appendix 2a - Summary of Key Entries from the ADR Dangerous Goods List PDF format
    • Appendix 2b ) - Examples of Biological Materials and their transport requirements PDF format
    • Appendix 3 - UoN Guide to the Transport of Infectious Substances and Excepted Quantities by Courier - detailing training, labelling and packing information PDF format
    • Appendix 4 - UoN Transports Checklist / Questionnaire Microsoft Word
    • Appendix 5 - UoN Approved Dangerous Goods Courier Service PDF format

The Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations 2009 (CDG Regs) and the European agreement ("Accord européen relatif au transport international des marchandises dangereuses par route", known as ADR) which together regulate the carriage of dangerous goods by road are highly prescriptive, quite complex and are subject to frequent change. Therefore, anyone needing to transport items that may be considered hazardous should contact the DGSA to confirm advice.
