Delivering research that informs policy worldwide
The Food Systems Institute will develop evidence-based policy briefings, tools and advice, distilling complex information into appropriate formats for policymakers to act on.
The University of Nottingham has a tradition of providing high-level advice to policymakers working on food, agriculture and other related issues. The Food Systems Institute will remain available to provide specialised insights and recommendations to policymakers at local, national and international levels.
In March 2019, Professor Richard Lea and Professor Gary England from the School of Veterinary Medicine submitted written evidence to the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee’s inquiry on toxic chemicals in everyday life.

In April 2020, specialists at the Rights Lab submitted evidence to the House of Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee’s inquiry labour in the food supply chain.
In September 2022 Dr Anne Touboulic submitted written evidence to the House of Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee’s inquiry on food security.
In May 2023 Professor of Developmental Biology in the School of Biosciences Ramiro Alberio was invited as a panelist for an European Food Safety Authority scientific colloquium to advise on cell-culture derived foods.

In June 2022 Professor of Microbiology in the School of Biosciences Cath Rees was appointed to the Food Standards Agency’s Advisory Committee on Microbiological Safety of Food.
In November 2020 Professor Paul Wilson led a consortium of universities and colleges from Rural Business Research, providing over 50% of the data, evidence and insights used by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to produce the new Agriculture Bill.
In October 2019 Associate Professor in Food Science Emma Watson contributed to a major report by the Food and Drink Sector Council, presenting a cross-chain approach and recommendations to policymakers on how best to address future workforce, skills and productivity concerns.
In February 2024, Professor Paul Dyer served as a panel expert addressing the House of Commons Science, Innovation and Technology Committee on harnessing the power of fungi to address health, environment and food insecurity challenges.
