The Food Systems Institute will develop evidence-based policy briefings, tools and advice, distilling complex information into appropriate formats for policymakers to act on.

The University of Nottingham has a tradition of providing high-level advice to policymakers working on food, agriculture and other related issues. The Food Systems Institute will remain available to provide specialised insights and recommendations to policymakers at local, national and international levels.

Toxic chemicals in everydaylife

In March 2019, Professor Richard Lea and Professor Gary England from the School of Veterinary Medicine submitted written evidence to the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee’s inquiry on toxic chemicals in everyday life.

Policy advisory roles

In May 2023 Professor of Developmental Biology in the School of Biosciences Ramiro Alberio was invited as a panelist for an European Food Safety Authority scientific colloquium to advise on cell-culture derived foods.

In November 2020 Professor Paul Wilson led a consortium of universities and colleges from Rural Business Research, providing over 50% of the data, evidence and insights used by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to produce the new Agriculture Bill.

In October 2019 Associate Professor in Food Science Emma Watson contributed to a major report by the Food and Drink Sector Council, presenting a cross-chain approach and recommendations to policymakers on how best to address future workforce, skills and productivity concerns.
