Athletes from the University of Nottingham Triathlon club competed in their first BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) race of the year and delivered an exceptional result!

The 2024-25 triathlon season began with the BUCS Duathlon Championships on Sunday 17th November. Taking place at the Mallory Park Race Circuit in Kirkby Mallory, University of Nottingham athletes entered into both the open and women's categories.

Duathlon races consist of a run leg, a bike leg, and a final run, requiring high levels of endurance as well as speed, and student Oliver Conway put on an outstanding display by besting the field and crossing the finishing line before all others to win gold! Finishing in a time of 54 minutes and 23 seconds - 30 seconds quicker than his nearest rival, Oliver took to the top step of the podium to become BUCS Duathlon champion.

Speaking about his performance, Oliver reflected "I'm really happy to take the win this weekend in a fast and competitive race. I went hard from the start, which helped split the field, and a group of five of us came into T1 together. On the bike, I broke away with one other athlete, and we managed to open up a 40-second gap heading into the final transition. I felt strong on the last run and managed to secure the win. It’s always great to see hard work pay off, especially at this time of year when we’re all transitioning from off-season. This result is a big confidence boost and gives me even more motivation for winter months ahead."

To add to Oliver's success at BUCS, he has also recently been selected to compete for Great Britain U20s at the European XC Championships in a few weeks time. We wish Oliver the best of luck at these championships.

There was also a top ten finish for the University of Nottingham in the women's race as Isabelle Price completed the course in a time of 01:05:36 to finish tenth, and plenty of other #GreenandGold athletes registered finishes inside the top-50 of the championships.

Triathlon club president Ben Jackson said of the event - "This year we had many members from the club come to support even though they weren’t racing, emphasising the supportive atmosphere of our club and the growing enthusiasm for the sport itself. I am excited to see everyone’s progress in the rest of the season!"
