Nottingham athletes primed for another successful BUCS Nationals
BUCS Nationals - the annual multi-sport event that sees student athletes crowned national champions - returns to Sheffield this February, and a number of University of Nottingham students will be aiming for gold. One of the standout events on the annual BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) calendar, Nationals is a three day festival of sport, with championships across six different sports.

The impressive event brings together the UK's top-performing student-athletes for a thrilling competition from February 14th to 16th in the city of Sheffield. The six sports showcased throughout the weekend across world-class venues such as the English Institute of Sport are; athletics, karate, fencing, swimming, badminton, and climbing.
Karate has been one of our strongest events in recent years - none more so than twelve months ago when the green and gold took home all of the major gold medals, and we’ve got a stellar squad stepping onto the mat in 2025. James Harrison and Jordanna Williams will be aiming to retain their individual kata titles when the action begins on Saturday, February 15th, with hopes of adding to our medal tally.
Meanwhile, last year’s athletics sensation, Daniel Goriola, is also back and aiming to defend his hurdles title! He’ll be sprinting for glory on Friday, February 14th, hoping to go back-to-back and solidify his brilliant form on the track.
The University of Nottingham has a history of smashing records at BUCS Nationals, and none more so than in recent times as our biggest medal haul came in 2024, with a whopping 30+ medals, including 8 golds. From sprint stars to martial arts champions, our athletes have continuously made their mark on the national stage, and will be aiming to do the same again in 2025.
From high-speed athletics to jaw-dropping karate showdowns, gravity-defying climbing to precision-perfect swimming, BUCS Nationals has it all. The University of Nottingham is ready to make this year the best yet, and we look forward to supporting our athletes in achieving their goals. With Nationals being a gruelling three day's of competition, all of our athletes will be supported throughout the weekend by physiotherapists from our Sports Injury Clinic - aiding in recovery and injury prevention.
