Community Presence & Support

Find out more about our Community Engagement Ambassadors who patrol throughout the year and focus on supporting students as they adjust to living off campus. These ambassador patrols are alongside regular work with council partners in the community to address waste management and housing issues with a direct and joint approach. Neighbourhood Patrols

The Community Engagement Team participates in regular Joint Patrols, working alongside Nottingham City Council's housing and waste teams and Neighbourhood Safety Officers (NSOs). These collaborative patrols address reported issues in the local community, including waste concerns managed by the council and behavioural matters involving students, handled by our team and NSOs. The initiative fosters a visible, coordinated presence, ensuring swift resolution of concerns and enhancing community well-being. These walks exemplify a longstanding partnership, reinforcing our commitment to creating a respectful and harmonious living environment for all.

Community Engagement Ambassadors

The Community Engagement Ambassador (CEA) scheme started in the 22/23 academic year. The UoN Community Engagement Team recruited 12 students to support community cohesion initiatives in communities where a large population of privately rented student properties exist. The CEAs are employed and managed by the university working each week across the academic year.

The scheme has expanded year-on-year with the newest cohort being made up of 26 ambassadors. They'll be out working and helping in multiple communities including Lenton, Radford, Dunkirk, Beeston and Kegworth.

Purpose of the initiative

  • To build positive and more longstanding relationships in the community between all residents
  • Promote respectful behaviour and raise awareness of living in a mixed and diverse community
  • Improve awareness of sustainability amongst students through better household recycling and litter picking as we support Nottingham’s Carbon Neutral 2028 ambition
  • Promote more consistent and ongoing work with partners such as Community Protection Officers (CPOs) and Police
  • Improve neighbourhood safety through a variety of crime reduction initiatives and campaigns

Supporting Karnival

Each year the Community Engagement Team supports Karnival, the University of Nottingham's student-led fundraising organisation. We do this by:

  • Supporting the termly Karnival Foodbank drive: Our Community Engagement Ambassadors deliver cards and flyers advertising the initiative to households in the local area, encouraging residents to donate canned and dry food.
  • Collecting donations: On collection day our Community Engagement Team gather the parcels assembled by Karnival volunteers and deliver them to the chosen charitable organisations. In previous years donations have been taken to FareShare in Lenton or redistributed among financially struggling students.
  • Contributing financially to the running of the Sutton Bonington festival: Each year 1,500 visitors to our Sutton Bonington campus enjoy locally produced food and beer while exploring information stalls and watching out UoN student bands entertain.
