Entry requirements

Foundation courses

Students taking the Cambridge Overseas School Certificate (COSC), East African Certificate of Education, Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or East African Advanced Certificate of Education are normally required to take a foundation programme.

Our foundation courses

We offer foundation courses for international students who are not qualified for direct entry to our undergraduate degree courses.

These courses are available at the University of Nottingham International College, just next to University Park Campus, in partnership with Kaplan International Colleges.

International foundation courses

Undergraduate courses

Full-time courses across our five faculties typically last for three to four years, although some degrees such as medicine and architecture have a longer duration.

Undergraduate entry requirements

For students taking the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE), the requirement for a bachelors is as per UK A levels, details indicated in the prospectus and online.

For students taking the the Cambridge Overseas Higher School Certificate (COHSC), University Diploma or Higher National Diploma, we can typically accept grades ranging from 3.0 to 3.7.

Our Undergraduate Prospectus lists entry requirements for A levels and International Baccalaureate students for each course.

Students taking APs or SATs should refer to our entry requirements for the USA.

Masters courses

We offer a wide range of postgraduate masters degree programmes across our five faculties. Full-time masters courses typically last for one year.

Masters entry requirements

We generally make offers for masters courses based on degree classifications only and not on GPA scores.

Bachelor degree classifications are similar to those in the UK and so the same requirement is needed: at least a 2.1 or second class upper, depending on the course you are applying for.

Check course details in our Postgraduate Prospectus to see whether your chosen course requires the equivalent of an Upper Second Class (2:1) or Lower Second Class (2:2) degree.

Degrees from recognised universities in Uganda can be accepted as meeting our English language requirements.

Research courses

Our PhD courses, available across a wide range of subject areas, typically include three years of full time research followed by an optional writing-up period of one year to complete your thesis.

PhD entry requirements

Applicants should hold a masters degree of a good standard from a recognised university in a relevant subject area.

Exceptional students may be considered for PhD entry without a masters qualification, but this is rare and would be more suitable for New Route PhD applicants.

Degrees from recognised universities in Uganda can be accepted as meeting our English language requirements.

You should identify possible supervisors at Nottingham before applying and prepare a research proposal to submit with your application.
