Harry - student experience

Harry describes how he found both a community and a sense of validation through the Black Leadership Programme.

The Black Leadership Programme has been designed for students of Black heritage to explore and celebrate their identity, voice and community through a series of workshops, designed and facilitated by trainers of Black heritage.

Harry took part in the 2023 programme. This is his story...

"Participating in the Black Leadership Programme challenged and reshaped my understanding of leadership, life, and the Black experience.

The combination of supportive staff and like-minded peers facilitated profound personal growth and broadened my worldview.

Initially, I joined the programme with the goal of networking with Black individuals at the University of Nottingham. However, I gained far more than just professional connections; I discovered lasting friendships and a sense of community. I approached the programme with an open mind, and I was pleasantly surprised by the depth and diversity of the discussions. The workshops covered nuanced topics from various perspectives, which allowed me to form new insights and conclusions.

Being in an all-Black space for the first time at university was pivotal for me. Before this experience, I often felt marginalised and lacked a space to express my thoughts and experiences. This programme validated my feelings and revealed that many of my peers shared similar experiences.

I realised that my concerns were not just in my head, and I learned effective strategies to navigate these challenges. The value of being heard and understood in this way is indescribable, and I found resonance in the shared stories of others.

Overall, the Black Leadership Program significantly enhanced my university experience, providing me with a supportive network and enriching my understanding of myself and the broader Black community."
