Summer research placement

Work as a research assistant on a real-life project

Are you interested in a career in research or academia?

Our summer research programme lets you support an academic staff member from the Faculty of Arts on a real research project!

You will work as a research assistant to develop key skills and gain a valuable insight into what a career in research is truly like.

Who can apply?

The programme is aimed at second-year undergraduate students (or very motivated first-year students!) in the Faculty of Arts. Please note that final year students cannot apply due to funding restrictions.

Joint honours students are welcome to apply, even if your home school is in another faculty.

When does it run?

The programme starts on the first Monday after term ends in June and lasts for four weeks. You need to be available for the entirety of the programme.

When do I apply?

Applications open in February. Initial applications will be shortlisted, and successful students will be sent projects in March.

You can apply for five projects which are of interest. Your applications will be shared with the project supervisors and you may need to attend an interview. Interviews and project matches take place in early spring.

What our students say

This was the best experience of my academic and working career so far. The project, and the implications that this will have on my future, is something I am extremely grateful for.

William Cox, summer research placement participant

I have so many real-world experiences and examples to draw upon for different skills and abilities, and even in myself I feel more confident and resilient in regard to the world of work.

The summer research placement influenced my future studies - it introduced me to a new field of study (in my case fairy tale literature) and helped me to build my academic interest in this field. This research experience also helped me gain self-confidence in academic research and promoted me to apply to postgraduate studies in children’s literature.
