Marketing associate at The Letters Page

Cara writes a letter to you detailing what her role has entailed, the skills she has gained, and passes on some tips and tricks she's learned along the way to becoming a successful marketing associate.

Dear friend,

The last couple of months I have been doing a placement at The Letters Page. It has been going really well, and I feel like it has introduced me to new skills and abilities which I can use in the outside world. I enjoy my placement at The Letters Page, it's something I find particularly inspiring, and shows the beauty of writing letters and the meaningfulness letter writing has.

My role specifically focuses on marketing, so I have taken responsibility of the Instagram and X (Twitter) page. This is important, as social media is so widespread now, and can be used to gain a larger following.

I’ve been creating eye-catching posts to help attract a wider audience, as well as maintaining current followers of The Letters Page. To achieve this, I created a timetable on when to post certain content, and included deadlines to work to.

This helped me significantly, as it means I'm not rushing posts or making mistakes - something you can do too, if you take on the role. I've also learned the importance of interacting with the audience and posting regularly. I interact with audiences through reposting stories where they have mentioned The Letters Page, and I check our DMs and messages regularly. Within posts, I try to respond to as many comments as I can. Posting regularly also helps the accounts maintain a solid audience, while also enabling the marketing team to see what content performs best.

My role has also helped me understand the importance of teamwork. This is because we all have to look at the letters together and discuss which one would be the best for the submissions.

When doing this, we all discuss the pros and cons of the letters which we get. This helps my marketing role, as I need to have a good understanding behind what is being published when I post about it, so I can explain it in the best way I can to ensure it’s interesting to the audience.

Additionally the role inlcudes creating content for apps, and our second marketing associate looks at the statistics. Together, we can then discuss how to increase interest and what we need to improve in order to achieve this.

This placement has encouraged me to think about my future, possible careers I might not have thought about before. The idea of marketing has always appealed to me, but now I understand it more and what is required to make key content.

I've also gained an understanding of the importance of marketing, and its ability to help businesses grow if you use it in a positive way. I've learned to use different apps to create content, such as Canva, which several companies ask for experience in. Additionally, this experience has helped me improve on aspects I will need in future roles, like time management and organisation - keeping up with my studies while engaging in the placement.

If I spoke to a student who wanted to do this role in the future, I would tell them to take a risk and apply. Before this placement, I found it hard to push myself out of my comfort zone and try new things, however I think this placement has helped improve my confidence.

It also gives you full independence on creating the content, so it would be useful for anyone who is considering a job in marketing. I hope my letter is useful to you if you decide to apply, and I wish you luck on your journey.

All the best,

Cara
