Sorting through submissions in Jon McGregor’s office, Trent Building (Jon is editor of The Letters Page online journal). The Letters Page is a literary journal in letters, published by the School of English at the University of Nottingham and edited by Jon McGregor. We publish essays, stories, poetry, memoir, travelogue, and criticism; but all in the form of letters. We are interested in the literary traditions of letter-writing, and in the idea of correspondence in a digital age. http://www.theletterspage.ac.uk/

Production editor at The Letters Page

Ruby writes to you describing her experience in the role, sharing some helpful advice along the way.

Dear future applicant,

I’m writing to you as I’d like to give you some insider insight on what working for The Letters Page is like.

In my time with the team, I worked for Production, where my fellow Production Editor and I helped select the best submission for publication, format the aerogramme, streamline the process of sending it to our contact list, and contacted authors to see if they would be interested in submitting a piece to us.

Although all this work does sound quite daunting to begin with, our roles and responsibilities were laid out clearly to us by those who run The Letters Page, and our weekly sessions were massively beneficial in allowing us to discuss where we were at in the production process, and any issues we may have had.

I think that one of the most valuable things that this role has given me is a deeper understanding of the production process. Admittedly, The Letters Page does work on a smaller scale than, say, many traditional publishing houses.

I feel that the skills and experience I have gained in professional communication with authors, selecting submissions, and overseeing the work’s publication has proved invaluable.

The smaller group that I worked with undoubtedly helped me find my feet far better than I would have if I worked with a larger team.

The best piece of advice that I could give you in your future work is to communicate with your team if any issues arise, or you are finding that you don’t understand something - after all, you’re all working towards the same goal!

Best of luck in your application, and I’m looking forward to seeing oncoming Letters Page aerogrammes!

Sincerely,

Ruby
