The Creative Student Network: Sarah's experience

Sarah tells us about her time shadowing the stage production manager for Florence + The Machine.

How did you find out about the Creative Student Network (CSN)?

During Welcome Week we had a bunch of induction events and they would promote the network there. The head for the CSN this year is actually one of the lecturers for my modules last semester. She would send out emails regarding the network and that's how I found out about it.

What made you join the network?

I'm a second-year student, so I figured it was time that I start exploring my options regarding jobs. I also just wanted to gain more experience or knowledge that would either benefit my CV or teach me new skills.

It's reassuring to know that I could check my email or the Moodle page at any time and there's just hundreds of opportunities in the form of experiences, jobs, or guest speaker events that would help educate myself and navigate what I want to do.

Have you attended any guest speaker talks? Or taken advantage of any of the other opportunities?

I haven’t had time to go to any of the guest speaker events yet, but I’ve been to one of the career talks. It was about how to work on your CV, and they would talk about how to expand your horizons and explore the job market.

I also found out about the subject ambassador job through the network, where I can represent my subject at open days and events. I was able to apply and get that job.

You shadowed the stage production manager for the Florence + The Machine set-up. How did you get that opportunity?

An email was sent out regarding the opportunity. I'm actually a fan of Florence + The Machine, so I figured that's a really cool opportunity and I'm really interested in the music industry.

I had to apply with an application form that had a few questions like ‘Why would you want this experience?’, and ‘Why would you be a good fit?’. A few weeks later, I got an email saying I was selected!

My ticket to the concert!

What skills did you gain from this experience?

The stage production manager oversees everything that goes on behind a concert. So he's looking at the set design, the sound engineering, and the lighting. We were able to see how it went on a few hours before the concert, how they would set up.

It was really cool to see the difference before and after, because we were actually given a free ticket to the concert as well. He also talked about his experiences about how he got his job and how he made his way up the ladder.

I'm not really one that would typically go out and do stuff like this by myself, so I was able to step out of my comfort zone. That helped me a lot.

Have your career aspirations changed as a result?

I never considered doing something like that, but since that day I think it is something I could consider. I always imagined maybe going into the marketing or advertising aspect, but I think this is a pretty cool experience as well.

It's an experience I really enjoyed. I learned so much more about what goes on behind a concert than I ever could have just by reading something online.

Anything else to add?

Why wouldn't you join the network?! It’s free, you don't have to pay anything. It's there and you can look it up when you want to. It’s just something that’s
helpful.
