Nottingham: a city for film fans

Movies in the heart of the East Midlands.

Movie sets and stars

Nottingham’s beautiful city and its surrounding countryside have been used in a huge variety of movies and TV shows over the years and continues to be a popular filming location.

Home to Batman, Nottingham’s spectacular Wollaton Hall took on a very special role in when it appeared as in The Dark Knight Trilogy as ‘Wayne Manor’.  This historic Elizabethan mansion is a popular attraction in Nottingham, and a number of The Dark Knight scenes were filmed in Hall and its grounds, including a garden party scene at night.

You could also spot celebrity with film stars being seen in the city including Sir Michael Caine, Tom Cruise, Emma Watson, Christian Bale, Daniel Radcliffe, Emilio Estevez and others.

Here is just a selection of the diverse films shot in Nottingham.

The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

In this Batman production directed by Christopher Nolan, and starring Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Wollaton Hall is used as Batman’s Wayne Manor, while Gotham is actually a small village in Nottinghamshire.

Bronson (2008)

This now classic biographical crime film stars Tom Hardy as Britain’s most notorious and violent prisoner, Charles Bronson. Filming was done in and around the St. Ann's, Sherwood, Worksop and Welbeck Abbey areas of Nottinghamshire.

Easy Virtue (2008)

This romantic comedy is a remake of the 1928 silent movie, now starring Jessica Biel as the glamorous American that marries a young Englishman. Filmed in the magnificent Georgian style manor, Flintham Hall in the Nottinghamshire village of Flintham.

This is England (2006)

A coming of age story starring Thomas Turgoose as Shaun, a kid who lost his father in the Falklands War and earns the respect of skinheads when he stands up to their teasing. The film was mostly shot in St Ann’s and Wilsthorpe College in Long Eaton.

Control (2007)

A biographical production starring Sam Riley as Joy Division lead singer Ian Curtis. The film was shot at the former Carlton studios in Nottingham, and in locations such as The Boulevard pub in Radford, Bestwood Social Club, and Nottingham High School.

Testament of Youth (2014)

A WWI drama based on Vera Brittain’s First World War memoir, stars Alicia Vikander as Vera Brittain, a woman who abandons her studies to become a war nurse. The main film location is the picturesque Welbeck estate.

Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1960)

A gritty classic drama of the 60’s, following Arthur, a young machinist. This film, mainly shot in Nottingham, gives you a glimpse into Nottingham’s historic industrial heritage.

The Princess Switch: Switched Again (2020)

A family-friendly Christmas film telling the story of Margaret Delacourt, the Duchess of Montenaro, who suddenly inherits the throne to her home country of Montenaro and switches places with her identical twin. The film pictures Nottingham’s Wollaton Hall as a magical winter wonderland.
