Life after graduation: shaping a successful career

Where will your mechanical and materials degree take you?

University is such an important time of your life and can set you up for an awesome career in your dream job. Read all about Tosin, and his experience studying manufacturing engineering at the University of Nottingham.

After graduating from university, Tosin followed his passions and began his successful career as a Senior Consultant for Deloitte, working on a variety of interesting projects.

What attracted you to studying engineering?

I chose Manufacturing Engineering for two reasons. One was because I didn’t want to limit my career paths when I completed my undergraduate degree. With the course you can get in various fields such as consulting, investment banking, project management, finance and the list goes on. At 18 it’s very hard to know exactly what you want to do career-wise, so doing engineering keeps many doors open after completing your degree.

Secondly, I love to solve problems and manufacturing engineering is all about solving problems in many worlds such as supply chain and industrial manufacturing. You’re given the chance to learn from the real-world and see the solutions to problems in real time.

Why did you choose to study at the University of Nottingham?

It’s one of the top universities in the world and a member of the prestigious UK based Russell Group, which is a group of some of the best universities in the country.  In addition, the university campus ground is amazing. It’s extremely green, and once you visit the campus you will fall in love straight away.

It’s very hard to know exactly what you want to do career-wise, so doing engineering keeps many doors open after completing your degree.

What did you enjoy most about your course?

I really enjoyed the fact that parts of our course were built around real workplace problems. We had the opportunity to visit companies such as Jaguar Land Rover, Boots Distribution Centre, and JCB. We were able to see how what we learned in the classroom was applied in the real world, including knowledge gained from modules about lean manufacturing and quality control. I really didn’t hear of many courses that offered such exposure to real world of work as the Manufacturing Engineering (MEng) degree I completed at the University of Nottingham.

How did your time at university help shape your career?

Through my visits to various companies such as Jaguar Land Rover, DHL, and Unilever with the university; I picked up a keen interest for solving operational issues and understanding how moving parts work in various industries. Working with my lecturers and using the materials the university provided, I was able to explore my interests in operational excellence. Due to this I chose to do a placement at Airbus and was successful. I even did my dissertation within this area during my placement with Airbus. After my placement period, I realised that I wanted to get my career off to a start in this space. The university made the course engaging with quality teaching and that really helped shape my career. After university, I joined BT (Openreach) and have now moved to Dublin to join Deloitte’s Operational Excellence Division as a Senior Consultant.

What advice would you give to current engineering students at Nottingham?

My advice is simple. Play hard work hard. Know when to have fun and when it’s time to get your head down academically. Ensure you get to know your lecturers and fellow students as they will be the ones to support you when times get tough.
