Group Design and Make Project
Department of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering module spotlight
Whilst studying in our Department of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering, you’ll work on a huge variety of interesting modules and practical tasks, gaining a thorough understanding of your course.
The Group Design and Make Project is a module where you’ll design, develop, and manufacture a product or prototype. Working in a group, you’ll work on your own product, with some ideas coming from industry, academics or even yourselves.
This module takes place in two stages. The first part involves writing your requirements and then completing all the preliminary design work, including concept generation. To do this you’ll use the knowledge and skills you gained from your course such as project management, engineering science, engineering design and programming. You’ll manage the project using an industry relevant process, making sure you’re well versed in industry techniques.
At the second stage of the project, you’ll create the digital representation of the design. Following that there will be a critical design review before the product or prototype is manufactured and evaluated. During the build you’ll make use of our workshop and rapid prototyping facilities. At the end of the module we have a “show day” where your projects are displayed to academics, industry colleagues and other students.
You’ll have a huge sense of pride and engineering achievement when you’ve finished your project. It’s often the element of their course our students are most proud of – and the one they are most keen to talk about in job interviews as well!
