A few days in the life of a Chemical and Environmental Engineering student

Follow Ben, as he shows you what studying at the University of Nottingham is like for a chemical and environmental engineering student

Choosing both a course and a university that’s right for you is a big decision - and a huge factor in your future career. We’re hoping to help make that decision a little easier, making sure that you have as much information as possible to help you make the best possible choice.

Read about Ben, one of our chemical and environmental engineering students, as he describes a few days in his life to give you a taste of what to expect. He’ll take you around our beautiful award-winning campus, attend lectures, study in his design group and prepare for his year in industry.

Tuesday

8AM – I wake up and grab some breakfast first thing. Afterwards I walk onto campus – a great start to any day as it’s so green and such a nice walk.

10AM – I head over to the Group Design Studios where I’ll be working in my design group. We discussed some methods needed in our current project, creating a hydrogen production plant.

12PM – I grab a quick lunch in the Coates Café with some of my course mates.

1PM – I head over to talk to one of my lecturers. I didn’t understand everything from my last lecture, but they have this great open-door policy. This means I can pop in for a chat at any point with them if there’s anything I need.

2PM – I spend some time in George Green Library, going over my notes to make sure I fully understand everything I’ve learnt this week.

4PM – I finish working for the day. Now’s the time that I really take in the campus, walking around the lake and chilling out with a friend.

Wednesday

8AM – After grabbing breakfast I head back to campus. It’s going to be a busy day as I have a couple of lectures and need to start preparing for my year in industry.

9AM – My first lecture. The first of the day and this one is part of the Reactor Design module.

11AM – My second lecture. This takes place in Keighton Auditorium and is taught by Rachel Gomes, the award-winning Professor of Water & Resource Processing.

12PM – Lunch time. I grab a quick sandwich before heading to the library.

1PM – I head back to the George Green Library – this time to start my applications for internships. I’m really excited to get some industry experience and earn some money on my year in industry.

5PM – I head home for some dinner and to chill with my housemates.

Thursday

9AM – I head to campus for a lab day. I love the practical side of my degree as you can really put your learning into practice.

10AM – It’s time for my stir tank lab. This involves mixing solutions inside a small tank, hoping to find the best mixing conditions.

12PM – I head home to study there. I’ve grabbed all the books I need from the library and need to write up notes from my last lecture.

7PM – I’m going to head to the Savoy cinema to watch a movie with my housemates. It’s close by and is one of those old-fashioned cinemas, it’s pretty cheap for students too!
