Biology alumni stories

Amy and Alisha studied Biology BSc and Biology MSc. They spoke to us about how their degree's have helped shaped their career paths since graduating.

Amy Sullivan, Management Consultant


Amy graduated from the Biology BSc course in 2017 and now works for Capco.

 

What does your current Job Role entail?

As a management consultant my role varies a lot depending on the type of project I’m assigned to and the client I’m working for. In my current role, I am supporting a chief of staff in the data department of a tier 1 investment bank with their strategic planning and communications.

 

How has your degree helped you professionally?

At first glance, my biology degree may not seem relevant to a career in financial services, but it has undeniably been the driving force behind my professional journey. From helping me land my first job in clinical research, to facilitating several career moves, my degree has opened many doors for me to get me to where I am today.

 

What advice would you give to a student embarking on this course?

Meet as many people as you can and get involved with lots of events and socials when you first join. The people you meet on your course could become your best friends, study buddies, housemates or even friends for life.


Alisha Jenkins, Integrated Care Programme Manager


Alisha graduated from the Biology MSc course in 2019 and currently works for Taurus Healthcare Limited (Herefordshire General Practice).

 

What does your current Job Role entail?

Integrating health and care services at system level in the county of Herefordshire. Working with the local authority, voluntary and community sector organisations and NHS hospital trusts and general practice to enable better working together to improve health care for Herefordshire residents. Project management, stakeholder engagement, budgeting, business cases, transformation and improvement.

 

How has your degree helped you professionally?

  • Data analysis
  • Attention to detail with reports and writing literature
  • Scientific method on projects / research studies e.g. the effects of group clinics on wellbeing scores for people with fibromyalgia

 

What advice would you give to a student embarking on this course?

Get organised, enjoy it, it's easier than you think! Don't wait until third year to buck up your ideas and work hard. Do the modules you enjoy.
