Vet medicine: The Guild
Harry Papworth, final year veterinary medicine and surgery student, explains his involvement in Sutton Bonington’s Student Union team.
"The Guild is the Student Union team at Sutton Bonington (SB), run by student volunteers.
Our job is to help run events and activities, make sure your voice is heard, and help you find support when you need it. We also help the other societies on SB to organise their events and answer any questions they have.
Everyone who studies on SB is automatically a member of the guild for free."
"We have representatives who oversee and deal with issues relating to sports, societies, sustainability, academia and student welfare, amongst others.
If students have any concerns or suggestions for improvements to the campus, we’re there to help deliver these improvements. For example, we had a request for more study spaces on campus, so we rearranged and added in more tables to one of the main study areas to create 50 more spaces.
As well as this, we run some of the biggest events of the campus year, including:
"I’m the treasurer. The Guild oversees all the societies on campus, and when they take any money - from cake sales or selling tickets - it comes through me to go into our safe, to then go into their bank accounts.
I am also there to help all the societies apply for grants and obtain sponsors so they are able to run the best events possible for students."
"It's nice to have a tangible impact on campus. You see the impact you're having and you'll be like, ‘This is good. We're doing a good thing here’.
I also really enjoy getting to help other people out when they have any questions or problems."
