Explore different clinical settings as a student nurse

At Nottingham, you'll split your time equally between theoretical study and practice placements. Giving you the chance to build essential knowledge and gain real-life clinical experience.

As a passionate aspiring nurse, we know you understand the dedication required to care for people in need.

We're aware of the importance of exposure to a varied caseload, in real environments. That’s why with us you’ll experience a range of settings* including:

  • medical wards
  • surgery wards
  • community nursing
  • acute care
  • recovery wards

Our placements are located within four large NHS trusts and local private or independent healthcare providers, in Nottinghamshire. This enables you to gain a wider perspective of the sector and understand the challenges patients and healthcare professionals face across nursing units.

On every placement, you’ll be supported by experienced Practice Assessors, Practice Supervisors and participate in student forums. We know you’ll be eager to get stuck in but our devoted team will always be on hand to support you whenever you need it.

*This will vary by course

Elective placements

In your second year, you’ll have the option to arrange your own elective placement. This provides you with an opportunity to get a deeper understanding of nursing, in an area that you're most interested in personally.

Previous students have spent their elective placement in another country, the prison service, or neonatal units. A small number of students have also been successful in finding a placement with the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) and the Department of Health and Social Care
