Careers and employability resources

This is the place where your future looks brighter than ever

Here at the University of Nottingham, we understand how important it is to equip you with the skills, experience and confidence to thrive in the job market and kickstart your dream career once you graduate.

Our award-winning courses are designed with this in mind, with academics at the forefront of research and innovation in their fields, supporting your path to success.

Ready to reach your full potential?

We have more graduates working in highly skilled jobs than any other UK university.

Outside your degree, we have extensive careers and employability resources and a dedicated careers team to give you killer confidence and skyrocket your skills. It’s no wonder our graduates are the second most targeted by the UK’s leading graduate employers, including Accenture, IBM, Jaguar Land Rover, Sky and Tesla.

Here are our top 5 careers resources to help you sharpen your skills, fine-tune your focus or explore your options.

1. Online learning platform

Does the thought of presenting make you feel nauseous? Are you in Excel hell? Maybe you want to unleash your leadership skills or spend some time working on your well-being.

Our online learning engine ‘magpie’ has you covered. Magpie’s personalised experience helps you develop career skills and competencies to thrive in your chosen industry.

When you register, you’ll be asked questions about your learning style and skill levels across different areas. Magpie will build a personalised profile with goals, strengths and weaknesses and then recommend resources for you to build your knowledge, including:

  • Blogs
  • Articles
  • Online courses
  • Videos

Explore Magpie and find out you can hone your skills and discover new abilities.

2. Nottingham Advantage Award

The Nottingham Advantage Award is our free employability scheme designed to help prepare you for the job market and formally recognise your activities and achievements outside your degree.

You can choose modules based on where you want to prove your skills, whether that’s course-specific or extra-curricular. The great news is, there are loads to choose from, including:

  • Buddying, mentoring and peer support modules
  • Career skills and employability modules
  • Community and volunteering modules
  • Cultural awareness, language learning and study abroad
  • Employer-led modules
  • Enterprise, events and project management modules
  • Internships, placements and work experience modules
  • Student Union modules

Watch the videos from our Advantage Award team for more detail on how the scheme works and how you can get involved.

You can also read our blog post on how to boost your employability with the Advantage Award.

I developed my ability to communicate with others in different situations and discovered new directions in which I could take my career. Most importantly, I built a stronger character that I feel proud to carry with me into the future.

3. Student events

Are you keen to connect with potential employers? Excited to explore what placements and internships are available to you? Or maybe you want to build up confidence in the workplace.

During your time with us, you’ll have access to our exclusive free events with opportunities to meet employers, develop new skills, gain insight into work experience and explore different graduate careers.

Once you’ve joined us at the University of Nottingham, we’ll keep you up to date with what’s on each week via our events newsletter – keep an eye on your inbox.

Browse our events page to get an idea of the workshops, events and resources available to our current students.

At the careers fair, I learned about different professions in a range of industries. It has taught me that career paths are often dependent on personal interests, activities or work experience and aren’t limited by degree discipline. This is because the majority of jobs are open to any degree subject.

4. Student blogs

Our inspiring academics and dedicated careers team could talk to you all day about what you can do to boost your employability, but what’s better than hearing directly from your peers about their experiences?

Our current students write regular blog posts across a variety of topics, from different degree backgrounds, perspectives and cultures.

Discover tips and resources for motivation, find out how extra-curricular activities can help you get the most out of your degree or hear about a research placement in a Mexican jungle.

5. Career Mentoring

Our Career Mentoring scheme is a unique opportunity to be supported with your career goals by a member of our alumni community. We have volunteers from different industries and professions at varying stages of their careers to provide you with one-to-one support and advice.

How does it work?

Once we’ve matched you with a suitable mentor for your professional development, you’ll develop a relationship over four months through regular phone calls and online contact.

We know this might sound a little daunting for some of you but don’t worry – we'll provide you with online training and resources to help you approach your mentoring with confidence.

Learn more about our Career Mentoring and hear from previous participants – both mentees and mentors.

The encouragement from my mentor to look at what I genuinely find interesting rather than prioritising other people’s ideas of successful careers was very refreshing.  There was always a lot to think about following the meetings and I feel I had actionable steps to meet my goals.
