Used by students across the school, the North Lab building houses:

  • clinical setting rooms, such as practice consulation rooms
  • a dietetic lab
  • the Peter Buttery Teaching Laboratory
  • research laboratories, including an analytical lab

Also known as the Super Lab, the Peter Buttery Teaching Laboratory is used in practical teaching to carry out your own experiments. It contains:

  • 8 containment level 2 microbiological safety cabinets
  • 100 high powered microscopes with phase contrast
  • A NanoDrop microspectrophotometer 
  • CO2 incubators

Food Science and Nutrition

Our food science facilities include:

  • a flavour lab
  • biomaterials lab, for looking at the physical properties of food
  • sensory science centre

The food processing hall is used by food science students for quality testing products. The Bioenergy and Brewing Science Centre has a fully functioning brewery which is used by postgraduate brewing students.

Animal and Agriculture

The Centre for Dairy Science Innovation (CDSI) uses the latest technologies to increase the productivity and health of cows.

This centre offers the latest research technologies and expertise in Dairy Science, Dairy Herd Health and Welfare and Dairy Food Science.

We have a number of plant and crop growth facilities including:

  • over 1800m² glasshouse and polytunnel growing space used for undertaking work in seed bulking, plant nutrition and plant physiology
  • growth rooms where we can control factors such as light, humidity and CO2 levels
  • the Hounsfield Facility, where 3D x-ray imaging reveals the hidden half of plants

The Hounsfield facility

With over 1000 acres of land, our University Farm provides facilities for teaching and research. We produce:

  • over two million litres of milk per year
  • lambs from a grass based grazing system
  • a range of field crops, including milling and feed wheats, oilseed rape, maize, beans and triticale
