Discover how microbes influence your every day life

In your first year, you’ll take a module called Microbes and You where we explore how we as humans use microbes to function and how we can tackle global problems using microbial solutions. We cover topics like:

  • how microbes influence environmental processes
  • how microbial products contribute to healthcare, food production and manufacturing
  • the influence of technological developments
  • scientific understanding of microbes and the public perception of them

From the first semester, you’ll work in groups to bounce your ideas off other people and develop your knowledge as a team. In the second semester, you’ll take part in “The Microbe Debates” which includes an assessed group presentation at the end.

This is a great way to get to know your coursemates early on in your degree and who knows, you might even make some friends for life as well.

Through your assessments, you’ll also work on your writing and presentation skills to help you build confidence and prepare for the rest of your degree.

There are a range of teaching methods used in this module, including lectures, group tutorials and one-to-one tutorials with members of academic staff. Your tutorials are a great opportunity to develop your knowledge in a structured way and learn from your peers and the experts in your field.
