This second-year module is about preparing you for independent study, research, and the workplace.
You’ll develop academic skills to:
What kind of ethical professional are you?
As part of this module, you will complete an online questionnaire to see what sort of ethical professional you might be, our careers service will help you interpret the answers and translate them into actionable personal development.
Project and portfolio assessment
Assessment for this module will be in two parts. Firstly, you will complete a charity project which highlights an ethical issue of your choice. Projects in previous years have looked at foodbanks, sustainability, and childcare issues both raising awareness and financial donations for the charities involved.
Secondly, you will collate a portfolio in which you respond to various prompts regarding how you worked in your groups, dealing with ethical dilemmas and yet remaining true to your own principles.
Students not only enjoy the chance to explore and explain their ethical stance, but also the ability to critically unpick the ethical stances of authority figures.
Most of all they get a lot out of the charity project, which allows them to put their ethos in action and make a difference.

Aspects of difference and diversity include but are not limited to:
How you’ll learn
As well as an academic, module leader Dr Katharine Wakelin is a psychotherapist and takes an experiential approach to teaching.
This means you’ll learn through group setting exercises where you’re encouraged share your own experiences in a respectful and empathetic space.
I love the way we all talk in a circle about the topics and hear everyone’s experiences and thoughts.
The module has been really interesting and engaging. It feels as though everyone who is taking the module is interested in the content which allows us to have in-depth discussions.

Use your learning in the real world with an optional semester or 12-month placement.
This is an exciting opportunity to develop your personal and professional skills and apply your learning, particularly from the Developing Ethical Professional module.
As part of the assessment criteria, you will also be required to produce a legacy project to leave with your placement for the benefit of others.
Choose your placement
We’ve had a wide variety of placements chosen by students to reflect their interests; examples include:
One of your tasks for placement is a legacy project, so something that you leave with the school. So, I self-taught British Sign Language (BSL) and gave lessons which was an amazing opportunity for me because this was the first time I stood up in front of a whole class and gave a lesson.
