Experiencing societies as an economics student

Toni shares her experience as a member of NEFS

Societies that can benefit you and your course

There’s a wide range of societies with more of an economic focus at Nottingham, helping you to get the most out of joining. You’ll benefit from meeting new students from other courses that you may not usually cross paths with but also still have the same interests and focus.

Current student Toni tells us all about her experience as a member of the Nottingham Economics and Finance Society (NEFS).

2023 Welcome Fair

I decided to join NEFS at the society fair. They had their introductory session that day, so I went to see it with a few friends. The society explained they are one of the biggest societies on campus and that economics students have their membership paid for by the school. After hearing about the various divisions and sectors, I was intrigued by it.

I’m a manager for the Investment Fund, and on a typical day when my group has our weekly meetings, a few of my analysts will pitch stocks to me and we’ll decide as a group whether it’s a good investment or not. I usually make the final decision based on the opinions of the group. The best part is all the technical knowledge I now have of investing in stocks that will be beneficial to me in the future whether I end up in a field related to it or not. The most beneficial aspect of NEFS is how much it helps with career information and advice. While there’s the Careers Service with the University, NEFS is more catered towards economics and finance students aiming for banking and finance careers.

By working with industry-leading firms on presentations, workshops, and networking events throughout the year, you get the chance to progress your professional career.

Through our numerous campus events and mentorship scheme, NEFS offers fantastic career advice, as well as giving you the opportunity for some hands-on learning experience.  Aside from this, there are also regular social events, with discounts at bars, restaurants, and clubs and lots of sporting opportunities including football, basketball, and netball teams.
