Your Home Away From Home

Finding the familiar in a new city.

We know not all students can visit home easily, so we asked our international students and staff how they maintain a connection to their home countries while living in Nottingham. They gave us recommendations for restaurants, food shops, places of faith and community groups that cover the globe.

Authentic Arabic cuisine

"Falafel offers delicious Middle Eastern food at an affordable price and I love going there as it rekindles memories of my childhood in the UAE. The vast menu consists of authentic Arabic cuisine including falafel, shawarma, halloumi and fattoush. The cuisine is familiar to what I grew up with and tasting the food makes me fondly remember my time in the Emirates, making the distance from home feel shorter during days where I miss it the most."

- Navshrie (Biotechnology) recommended Falafel on Long Row

My gurdwara

"This is my gurdwara in Nottingham. A gurdwara is a religious place for Sikhs, but welcomes all religions. They have a prayer hall and provide langar facilities (a 'langar' is the community kitchen of a gurdwara, which serves meals to all free of charge, regardless of religion, caste, gender, economic status or ethnicity)."

- Deepak (Business and Management MSc, graduated in January 2022) recommended Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Gurdwara in Lenton

Making Ghanaian friends

Several students recommended the Ghanaian Students' Society, which 'serves as a bridge to unites hearts', making Ghanaian students feel like they never left home.
