From a passion for coding to life at Nottingham

For many students, university is more than just academic work; it’s about new experiences, personal growth and chasing ambitions. But financial worries can sometimes get in the way. That’s where the Faculty of Science Alumni Scholarship Awards come in, helping students focus on what truly matters.

A first-year computer science student shares their journey to Nottingham, their love for coding, and how the scholarship has made it easier to embrace both their studies and university life.

What brought you to the university?

“I have lived in Coventry for the last 15 years, after moving from Nigeria at the age of five. Moving from Nigeria was very difficult as my family came with nothing. My mum worked three jobs as a cleaner, teaching assistant and carer. I have always had a love for mathematics and subjects that required logic. Because of this, I studied maths, physics, and computer science at A level alongside philosophy and history in a more relaxed context.

“My interest in computer science began in Year 8 when it was introduced as a subject at my school. I later chose to study it at the GCSE level, where I learnt the theory behind computer science and the basics of coding.

“My passion for computer science deepened further at A level. I was able to explore logical thinking and apply it to mathematical concepts. As part of the course, I made a 2D side-scrolling adventure game which I thoroughly enjoyed doing. This experience solidified my decision to pursue computer science at university, where I am excited to continue learning new programming languages and develop my skills.”

Why did you choose Nottingham?

“I chose to study at Nottingham for many reasons. Firstly, because I liked the atmosphere that you get at a campus university. The greenery reminds me of the Cotswolds, where I did my Duke of Edinburgh expeditions. Although I am based in Jubilee, I enjoy taking walks and cycling through the main campus, where I see wild bunnies roaming free. I also enjoy reading by the lake when the weather is good.

“Secondly, I chose Nottingham because of the work opportunities and experience that I can gain during my degree. Finally, I am excited about the sports facilities available as I have always loved playing basketball and football, and being able to do this at amazing facilities is very enjoyable.”

Campus life

“My first semester of this degree has been very exciting. Although I have a heavy workload, I have learned a lot more about myself and the things that I enjoy. I have developed an interest in film photography which complements my love for walks, allowing me to capture the beauty I see during my journeys.

“I have joined several societies, including the Nigerian society, trading and investing society, hacking society, and economics and consulting society.”

How the scholarship has helped

“This scholarship has been crucial in supporting me throughout my degree. Coming from a family that moved to England, finances have always been a challenge. At times, it has prevented me and my siblings from being able to do things that we are passionate about."

I was thrilled when I received my acceptance email for the scholarship, as it meant that I could save the money and use it to buy a powerful laptop which would help me with my course.
