How the scholarship is empowering students to focus on their passions and academic goals

Each year, the Faculty of Science provides Alumni Scholarship Awards to undergraduate students, easing financial burdens and allowing them to fully engage in their studies.

This first-year physics student shares their story and why they chose Nottingham; how they’ve balanced their passion for two distinct fields, and how the scholarship has made all the difference in making their university experience a reality.

What brought you to the university?

“I come from a mixed Syrian-Polish background, I was born in Syria and moved to the UK at the age of seven. Growing up, my childhood and education were disrupted due to the civil war in Syria, leaving uncertainty about whether I would ever go back. The war caused my education to be interrupted for about a year, which has made me deeply appreciative of every educational opportunity I’ve had, especially when I compare my situation to that of my extended family back home. This is one of the reasons why I am so grateful that I even have the chance to pursue further education, as well as to be able to receive this scholarship.

“From a young age, I enjoyed mathematics and science, which led to my passion for physics, as I was naturally a curious person. My interest in philosophy came later. As I developed as a person, I became more aware of the world around me as well as more reflective of my previous life experiences. This led to my discovery of philosophy. I have an interest in a wide range of philosophy, particularly in metaphysics and existentialism.

“My journey to studying physics and philosophy wasn’t very straightforward. Initially, I had applied for 2023 entry, but I decided instead to do a degree apprenticeship in aerospace engineering working for Airbus. At the time, it felt like the apprenticeship was an amazing opportunity that I simply couldn’t refuse. While I gained valuable experience and enjoyed aspects of the apprenticeship, I was deeply disappointed that I couldn’t pursue the degree I had always dreamed of. Physics had been a passion of mine for a long time, and I felt as though I was setting that dream aside. Therefore, I decided to reapply for 2024 entry and was thrilled when I got in.”

Why did you choose Nottingham?

“I had decided to choose the University of Nottingham as I had visited several times -whether for open days or to see friends, I had a lovely experience every time. I really liked the city and the beautiful campus, and after researching the course content, I felt it was right for me.”

Campus life

“So far, I have enjoyed my time at Nottingham. My course has been fascinating, and I’ve enjoyed the balance between studying such two different subjects. I am staying at Broadgate Park, and I get along well with my flatmates.

“Thanks to the scholarship, I don’t need to take on a part-time job during term time, allowing me more time to focus on my studies and social life. I’ve made great friends and joined societies such as the physics and art societies, which have enriched my university experience.”

How the scholarship has helped

“When I found out I was going to be receiving this scholarship, I was extremely happy. I am very grateful, as it has allowed me to be able to fully focus on my studies without having to worry too much about being able to fund the cost of living.

“One of the reasons I had initially decided not to study physics and instead to pursue an apprenticeship was because of financial worries. The fact that I get to have this support and be able to study something I enjoy and am passionate about has been amazing, and I am extremely thankful."

In the future, I am hoping to complete a master’s in physics, perhaps even a PhD and hopefully go into research/academia, and I feel like this scholarship will enable me to do that.
