First-year animal science students
Easing financial stress so students can focus on what really matters
Every year, the Faculty of Science provides Alumni Scholarship Awards to undergraduate students, giving them the financial support they need to make the most of their university experience. The scholarship allows students to focus on their studies, get involved in campus life, and pursue their dreams without worrying about finances.
Two science students talk about their journeys at Nottingham, their experiences so far, and the impact this support has had on their lives.
“I was born in Sri Lanka but immigrated to the UK when I was two, where my parents worked tirelessly to support our family. My parents did not have the opportunity to enrol at a university due to tensions during the civil war, but they always emphasised the importance of education.
“Consequently, I am the first person in my family to attend university. From a young age, I was always passionate about animals. I was fortunate enough to have experiences with wildlife such as elephants, as well as stray cats and dogs, whenever I visited my family in Sri Lanka. This helped me realise the importance of veterinary care and instilled a drive to help animals in need. During my gap year, I volunteered at a cat shelter for six months, where I gained a greater understanding of animal treatment and welfare.”
“I am from South London. My mother is an administrator in a hospital, and I have one younger sister who is ten years old. I went to school in Lambeth, where for my A-levels I studied history, biology and chemistry. I chose those subjects, particularly the science ones, because I had a long-standing passion for the sciences which was nurtured by the teachers I had whilst at secondary school.”
“When I visited the University of Nottingham, I immediately felt at home. The campus was vibrant, welcoming and rich with resources. I was particularly drawn to the David Ross Sports Village, and knew that this was the place where I could best nurture my personal and academic interests.”
“I came to Nottingham because I had a passion for animal-based sciences, and had read about the facilities and courses which Nottingham provides. I believed that this university suited me the best. I chose the animal science course because it offers me many pathways post-graduation, and at the moment the pathway which I am on, and have been striving for, is to study veterinary medicine later. This has been something that I have wanted to do since I was very young and have consistently worked towards, from working at multiple farms and vets to studying animal management alongside my A-level qualifications.”
“Since starting my course in animal science, I have been thoroughly enjoying the academic challenges it presents. My first term has been an exciting mixture of lectures, practical work and seminars. I have found the coursework to be both demanding and rewarding, and I have particularly enjoyed the dissections.
“Outside of academic work, I have joined the cricket society. The balance of academic rigour and social engagement has made my first few months at Nottingham incredibly fulfilling.”
“I have really enjoyed my experience at Nottingham so far. My accommodation has been lovely, and I have enjoyed making it a space that is comfortable and conducive to live and work in. I have been going to sports events that the university hosts, and I really enjoyed getting back into sports I used to play like volleyball and tennis. I hope to participate more regularly.”
“When I first found out that I had been awarded this scholarship, I was overwhelmed with gratitude. It meant so much to me, not only because it eased the financial burden of university life, but because it reaffirmed that my hard work and dedication were recognised. I remember feeling a deep sense of relief and excitement - knowing that I could focus more on my studies without constantly worrying about finances.
“Looking ahead, I am eager to make the most of my time at Nottingham and pursue all the opportunities available to me. This scholarship will allow me to concentrate on my studies and take part in extra-curricular activities, such as sports. I am passionate about becoming a veterinarian, and this scholarship has given me the confidence to fully immerse myself in my studies and the university experience.”
“I found out about this scholarship whilst I was applying for university, through an email stating my eligibility. It meant a lot to me, as seeing that I could receive financial support took away a lot of the stress I had moving into university."
From this opportunity, I truly hope that I can reach the pinnacle of my academic capabilities and provide a stable foundation for my future. I also hope this will lead me closer to my goal of furthering my education in veterinary medicine.
