Engineering a future – a student’s path to Nottingham
Turning passion into opportunity – from building a first computer to studying engineering
For a first-year Electronic and Computer Engineering student at Nottingham, the road to university has been a journey of discovery, resilience and passion. Thanks to the support of the Alumni Scholarship, they can focus on their studies and dive into extracurricular projects without the weight of financial stress, making the most of everything university life has to offer.
“My journey to where I am today has been shaped by a combination of unique family circumstances and formative experiences. My parents have been separated for as long as I can remember, but they always worked tirelessly to ensure I never felt the divide. I primarily lived with my mum while seeing my dad every day, and the way they collaborated so seamlessly made my upbringing feel united despite the circumstances.
“Being the youngest of five siblings, I grew up in a household where education was valued, though not all my siblings had the opportunity to attend university. Two of my sisters did, which inspired me to aim for higher education as well.
“I studied the International Baccalaureate, taking computer science, physics, and mathematics at the higher level, and English, German, and geography at the standard level. My time there was incredible, and I reflect on those years with immense fondness.
“It was in Year 11 that I discovered my passion for engineering. Initially, I had been torn between pursuing medicine and engineering. My original IB subject choices included chemistry instead of computer science, as I thought medicine was the right path for me.
“However, an experience in the year before my GCSEs changed everything. I built my first computer from scratch, and that hands-on project sparked an enduring passion for designing and creating. By results day, I made the decision to swap chemistry for computer science and fully commit to becoming an engineer.”

“When it came time to choose a university, I explored options, but I was drawn to Nottingham because of its exceptional lab facilities and exciting opportunities, particularly Formula Student, where students collaborate to build a race car. I am now part of the 4WD Research and Development team, working on projects that give me invaluable real-world engineering experience.”
“Coming from a family that has not always had financial stability, this scholarship has significantly alleviated the burden on my parents. Growing up, my family often had to make sacrifices to support my education, but now, thanks to the scholarship, I can cover my expenses independently. This shift has not only lifted a financial strain from my parents but also allowed me to focus entirely on my studies and extracurricular pursuits.
“In just one term, I have experienced the profound impact of this scholarship. It has enabled me to take part in academic and research activities without the constant worry of financial stress. I cannot express enough how much this has meant to me and my family. Knowing that I can contribute to easing their worries fills me with immense gratitude and determination to excel in my studies.”
