Making the most of university life with a mechanical engineering degree

How the Alumni Scholarship is driving academic and personal growth

University is more than just lectures and exams - it’s about exploring new opportunities, meeting new people and making the most of every experience. Thanks to the support of the Alumni Scholarship, this first-year mechanical engineering student has been able to focus on their studies and get involved in extracurricular projects without constantly worrying about finances.

From their early fascination with cars to discovering their passion for engineering, their journey has been about growth, learning and embracing everything university life has to offer.

What brought you to the university?

“I grew up in Oldham, a town in Greater Manchester, where I moved at the age of three after spending my early years in the Midlands, where I was born. Neither of my parents attended university, and as the eldest of five siblings, none of them have pursued higher education yet either. My mother works part-time in childcare, balancing her job with the responsibility of raising my siblings on her own. I have been separated from my father for several years due to personal circumstances, and I am unaware of his current occupation. Despite living away from family, I am currently enjoying university, and I want to capitalise on all the opportunities I can.

“During my time in secondary school and primary school, I found myself achieving well in every subject I took, and I enjoyed each subject equally I would say. For A levels, I did physics, maths and chemistry, and the parts I found myself enjoying the most were mechanics in physics and maths, as well as the inorganic side of A level chemistry. I had an interest in engineering from an early age, due to a fascination with cars.”

Favourite module and campus life

“One thing about the university that attracted me was the campus, as well as the proximity to home, compared to places like Bristol or London, meaning I can easily visit my family if I want to.

“My first term at Nottingham has been an enjoyable and eye-opening experience. My accommodation is pleasant and has an en-suite bathroom. I was lucky enough to get flatmates who are not too noisy, and who also keep our shared area clean.

“So far on my course, my favourite part has been the thermodynamics and fluid mechanics module, as I find it interesting, and I can see the real-world applications of what we learn in my day-to-day life.

“I am considering joining the archery club and Muay Thai club in my second semester, and the thing I look forward to the most is enjoying the warmer weather and longer days on campus later in the year.”

How the scholarship has helped

“When I found out I was going to receive the scholarship, I was quite excited as this serves as an insurance that I will not encounter any financial hardships while studying, and I also won't have to ask my mother for financial assistance and burden her further."

The support I have received through this scholarship has provided me with a sense of security and stability, allowing me to fully embrace and enjoy my university experience.
