Theology and Religious Studies seminar with Richard Bell - Humanities

Theology and Religion

Religion is among the most profound, divisive, and enduring aspects of human life. Making sense of religion and its impact is essential to understanding other cultures.

On our courses, you’ll investigate how religious ideas, practices, and identities develop over time. You’ll explore the insights theology and ethics bring to today’s big questions, and examine the influence of religious beliefs on science, philosophy, art, and literature.

As our expertise includes both ancient and contemporary religion, your modules range across the oldest texts and philosophies to the ethics of social media.

What our students say...

Jodi Kiang

"The highlight for me was being able to create my own degree. There was so much more freedom of choice, so I could really pick the things I loved. I did do a lot of ethics from the philosophy side, and I picked modules that had that ethical conversation going on, but also with a real focus on Biblical studies, which is the other part I was interested in."

Francis Adam

"It's a very broad subject that touches on a lot of areas and opens you up to a lot of ideas and understandings about people. We’ve covered philosophy, history, media, literature, law and international relations. If you love thinking and to present arguments, sharing your views and challenging other people’s then I’d encourage you to study Theology and Religious Studies."

About our courses

Our courses are delivered through:

  • lectures
  • seminars
  • tutorials
  • one-to-one supervision (for the final-year research dissertation)

Assessment

The development of oral communication skills is an important aspect of our course. Key modules in all years involve assessment not only via written work, but also through oral presentations or participation in seminar discussions.

Most modules in the first two years are assessed by a combination of essays and exams. In the final year, some modules are assessed by a single long essay.

There is also a dissertation in the final year, where you complete in-depth research into a topic of your choice.

A degree in theology and religious studies leads to a wide range of careers.
