Guest column

Hello all!

I’m Muhammad and I've joined UoN as Director of Environmental Sustainability. After 15 years leading sustainability efforts across public, private, and voluntary sectors, I've had the privilege of seeing first-hand how powerful climate action can be.

In my previous role at the Ministry of Justice, I spearheaded their Net Zero Carbon Strategy. It was inspiring but challenging, work as we navigated the realities of translating ambitious goals into tangible delivery.

Earlier in my career, I worked for a local authority and Transport for London (TfL), delivering the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) across central London and leading on TfL’s carbon management planning and the environmental assessments. I’ve also served as a Non-Executive Director at Keep Britain Tidy and Nottingham City Transport.

I’m genuinely looking forward to working with our talented university community to make sustainability a core part of everything we do.

COP29 offers a great moment to reflect on how universities can lead the charge on climate action. The commitment at Nottingham is strong, and I believe we can leverage it to face the challenges ahead - rising expectations, financial limitations, aligning our plans with the university’s strategic direction and the complex task of balancing immediate needs with long-term goals.

It’s these very challenges that enables us to be creative, to find innovative solutions, and to inspire our students to become tomorrow’s climate-conscious leaders.

- Muhammad Ali
