Accessibility statement for Click and Study

This accessibility statement applies to nottingham.libcal.com/r. Click and Study is local branding for the space booking software LibCal, which is produced by the supplier Springshare.

This website is run by University of Nottingham Libraries in partnership with our supplier Springshare.

We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • Webpages cannot be navigated using just a keyboard.
  • The Availability page – central to making a booking – has issues with accessibility due to reliance on colour, poor support for navigation using devices like keyboards, and poor labelling of elements.

If you have any difficulties making a space booking because of these issues, please notify library staff and request that they make the booking of your behalf

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

University of Nottingham is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

Key functionality

These issues are most likely to affect your use of Click and Study.

  • At 400% zoom the website loses functionality. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.10 (reflow).
  • The webpage cannot be accessed if only using a keyboard. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.1.1 (keyboard) and 2.1.2 (no keyboard trap).
  • The titles of pages are not clear. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.2 (page titled).
  • A parsing error appears on the Availability and Click and Study pages in relation to line 124 column 1 to line 124 column 92. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.1 (parsing).

Navigation and features specific to the Availability page

You may have challenges in navigating and using the Availability page.

  • The table may become impossible to view as the CSS is not sufficiently structured. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.2 (meaningful sequence).
  • The individual study space links use an icon to indicate power sockets which are difficult to see and will not be mentioned by a screen reader. It is only possible to reference the dropdown box and bin icon in a way that assumes the user can see them, as they are not well labelled in the code. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.3 (sensory characteristics).
  • The timetable uses red and green as the key to indicate whether a space is available or not. There is also low contrast between the colours in the table and the page forward and backward arrows. These fail WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.1 (use of colour) and 1.4.3 (contrast ratio).
  • The page has a time limit which, although it reads out a warning message, only tells the user to ‘click here’, and will not be accessible using a screen reader. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.2.1 (time adjustable).
  • When using the tab button to move through study space links focus moves along the list of spaces, rather than through the time slots for a space as might be expected. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.3 (focus order).
  • Each time slot is coded as a link, but the accessible name / description of that link does not make it clear that clicking the link opens a new menu. It is also not clear that the user has to click ‘Submit Times’ to move to the next stage. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.4 (link purpose (in context)).
  • The timetable cannot be navigated with arrow keys. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.7 (focus visible).
  • In the dropdown box which appears when a start time is selected the user can change the end time for a slot. This reloads the page and causes a change in the colours on the screen. Selecting a time and date in the dropdown box also shifts focus back into the larger box. These fail WCAG 2.1 success criterion 3.2.2 (on input).
  • When a user attempts to make multiple bookings, the page informs the user of an error but offers no guidance for correction. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 3.3.3 (error suggestion).
  • When the date above the table is changed, it is not announced by a screen reader. A user could change the date by accident and not know that this has happened. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.2 (name, role, value).

Navigation and features specific to the Click and Study page

You may have challenges in navigating and using the Click and Study page.

  • The University of Nottingham banner and the navigation menu at the top of the page both direct back to the homepage and do not have clear link text indicating that they refresh the page. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.4 (link purpose (in context)).
  • All headings show as H1, whereas all headings following the main heading of the page should be coded as H2. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.6 (heading and labels).
  • When a user moves through the language option dropdown box using a cursor the page resets causing a change of context. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 3.2.2 (on input).
  • The language dropdown does not have an associated ARIA role and does not function according to the WAI-ARIA authoring practices. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.2 (name, role, value).

We are actively reviewing content and have introduced new working practices with a focus on user needs and providing inclusive content to our diverse audiences.
