Accessibility statement for ExamSys
ExamSys is an e-assessment system that supports various elements of the academic workflow. This includes setting exam papers, mapping questions onto learning outcomes, post-exam analysis and feedback. ExamSys is also an open source project to which anyone can contribute.
We want our authorised users to be able to use ExamSys in a flexible and accessible way. For example, that means you should be able to:
- Navigate questions using only the keyboard
Users cannot adjust any settings for themselves within exam delivery, as accessibility requirements should be declared prior to an assessment. In ExamSys, accessibility settings are set for an individual, rather than for an assessment/schedule.
Once specified, these settings are used for every assessment that the user sits. The following can be modified:
- Extra Time
- Font Size
- Typeface
- Background Colour
- Foreground Colour
- Marks Colour
- Heading/Theme Colour
- Labels Colour
We have also made the text that we include in ExamSys as simple as possible to understand.
How accessible ExamSys is
ExamSys is an enterprise-level e-assessment management system, led by the University of Nottingham. It has support for formative quizzes, summative exams, surveys and several other paper types. Authentic assessments can be created using any combination of 15 question types together with graphics, audio files and video.
It has been designed around standards and supports QTI 1.2 import/export to its internal question bank, LTI support for integration with VLEs and LDAP for authentication.
We know some parts of ExamSys are not fully accessible:
- you, as an individual, cannot change the colours, font or text size
- you cannot modify the line height or spacing of text

How we tested this website
ExamSys was last tested during the week commencing 24 August 2020. The test was carried out by the Learning Technologies Team at the University of Nottingham.
The Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 relate and use language specific to websites therefore, it is not possible to complete a direct assessment of the e-assessment system against the regulations. It has been necessary to translate and interpret the regulations to apply to an e-assessment context. The system is desktop based and not designed for use on a mobile device.
What we’re doing to improve accessibility
We are continually working to improve accessibility to ensure future versions are fully compliant with the Digital Accessibility Regulations 2018.
Preparation of this accessibility statement
This statement was prepared on 5 October 2020 under the title "Accessibility statement for Rogo".
It was updated on 8 December 2022 to reflect the renaming of our e-assessment system from Rogo to ExamSys.
