Biography
Criminologist with research interests in Penal Theory and Penology, Sociology of Prisons, Sociology of Risk and Power, Emotions within the Criminal Justice System, Narrative Criminology, Sensory Criminology, Criminological and Sociological Theory, Race, Racism, and Criminal Justice; Cultural Studies/Criminology; Ethnography; Qualitative Research (Methodology and Methods), and the Philosophy of the Social Sciences. His most recent book is concerned with forensic psychologists employed within the prisons of England and Wales: Forensic Psychologists: Prisons, Power, and Vulnerability. He also recently co-edited (with Drs Kate Herrity & Bethany E. Schmidt) Sensory Penalities: Exploring the Senses in Places of Punishment and Social Control.
Expertise Summary
I have experience of a wide range of research projects within varying Criminal Justice contexts. Within academia and the Third Sector I have conducted, overseen, and managed research, utilising varying methods, within: prisons, probation, youth justice, and forensic mental health. However, my main area of expertise is prisons and systems of punishment and the relationship between penal theory and the direct experiences of penality.. As a result of professional and academic research projects I have written and published in leading journals on the experiences of differing forms of penality, from a variety of perspectives, including, emotions, narrative and identity, cultural pains of border control (as experienced by Foreign National prisoners), and most recently have played a significant role in developing the potential of a Sensory Criminology.
