Biography

Dr Rebecca Banwell-Moore joined the School of Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Nottingham in November 2020 as a Research Fellow on the UKRI funded 'Prison Regulation for Safer Societies: Participatory, Effective, Efficient?' study. She received her BA (Hons) degree (Criminology and Sociology) from the University of the West of England (2013), her MSc (Criminology and Criminal Justice (Research Methods)) from St. Anne's College, University of Oxford (2014) and her PhD (Criminology) from the University of Sheffield (2020).

Rebecca has held academic posts at the University of Sheffield, University of Gloucestershire and the University of the West of England and has more recently held a research post at the University of Sheffield on the 'Good' police custody: Influencing police custody policy and practice study.

She is a member of the: European Society of Criminology's Restorative Justice working party; Criminal Justice Alliance's Restorative Justice working party; and the Restorative Justice Council. She engages with local stakeholders in the criminal justice, restorative justice and victim services sector. She is also a peer reviewer for the International Journal of Victimology.

Her research interests are: restorative justice; victimology; youth justice; penology; and criminal justice.

Rebecca is also a trained and practising mediator (neighbourhood disputes) and restorative justice facilitator (youth offending).

Expertise Summary

Rebecca's area of expertise is restorative justice. Her particular focus is on victim participation in restorative justice and the role of criminal justice stakeholders.

She is also a trained and practising mediator (neighbourhood disputes) and restorative justice facilitator (youth offending) - having worked in social housing and the Youth Offending Service.

Research Summary

Rebecca is a Research Fellow on the UKRI funded 'Prison Regulation for Safer Societies: Participatory, Effective, Efficient?' study at the University of Nottingham.

She is also currently disseminating and publishing the findings of her doctoral empirical research entitled: 'Restorative justice: understanding the barriers and enablers to victim participation in England and Wales'.

After completing her doctorate (entitled: Restorative justice: understanding the barriers and enablers to victim participation in England and Wales') Rebecca was employed as a Research Assistant on the ESRC funded 'Good' Police Custody Study at the University of Sheffield (Feb - Sept 2020).
