Description

The Department of American & Canadian Studies and the Leverhulme Trust presents:

A Special Lecture by Celeste-Marie Bernier, Professor of African American Studies, University of Nottingham

Life is at Stake: A History of Slavery in Black British and African American Art

June 23, 6pm-7.15pm

Five Leaves Bookshop, 14a Long Row, Nottingham, NG1 2DH

A leading expert on slavery and art, Professor Bernier will trace the living history of slavery in rarely-seen paintings, murals, sculptures, drawings and prints by African, African American and Black British artists working today. Warring against the stranglehold of white supremacy, black artists endorse a radical politics of resistance and join a centuries-long tradition of art-making, a powerful tradition that survived against all odds to dramatize the enduring conviction by enslaved and free women and men that "struggle is a beautiful thing."
