Modern Languages year abroad

;The year abroad lets you experience your language/s of study in a culture where it's spoken natively. The benefits of learning in this way are tremendous.

What can I do on my year abroad?

Depending on the language you are studying, you might:

  • study at one of our partner institutions

  • work as part of an English Language Assistantship through the British Council

  • undertake a work placement during your year abroad

It's possible to mix and match your choices of study, work or teaching if you are spending time in more than one country.

Please note: In order to study abroad you will need to achieve the relevant academic requirements as set by the university and meet the selection criteria of both the university and the partner institution. The partner institution is under no obligation to accept you even if you do meet the relevant criteria.

What is a year abroad really like?

Where can I go for my year abroad?

If you're studying a modern language as part of your degree

You may spend the full academic year abroad, in a country/countries that speak the languages you are studying.

If you're studying a single honours programme

You will spend the full academic year abroad, in a country which speaks that language.

If you're studying two languages, as part of a joint honours degree

You will divide your year between two countries, each one speaking a language of your study.

If your degree consists of three languages

You will split your year as evenly as possible, spending a minimum of ten weeks in each country.

Please be aware that study abroad, compulsory year abroad, optional placements/internships and integrated year in industry opportunities may change at any time for a number of reasons, including curriculum developments, changes to arrangements with partner universities or placement/industry hosts, travel restrictions or other circumstances outside of the university's control. Every effort will be made to update this information as quickly as possible should a change occur.
