Department of Classics and Archaeology

Methodologies of interpretation

At the root of building a picture of the past from the evidence available to us, whether that be a classical text, a statue or an archaeological assemblage, lie methodologies of interpretation.

The Department focuses on histories of scholarship, hermeneutics, the transmission and reception of historical cultures across time, and explicit reflection on disciplinary differences in discussing texts, visual culture and archaeology. By doing so, our research contributes to this fundamental aspect of the study of the past.
