The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the system used by the four UK Higher Education funding bodies to assess research quality in UK universities. The assessments for the individual departments in the School of Humanities give an indication of the high quality of our research and standing among UK universities.

We are delighted that our five departments have been recognised for their excellent research, impact and research environments as part of the REF2021 (Research Excellence Framework), the national assessment of UK university research. More than 90% of the School's impact case studies were rated as either 'World Leading' or 'Internationally Excellent' and within each Department more than 75% of the research submitted was rated at that same, high level.
