Professor Sue Arrowsmith presents on procurement in sport at the Annual Conference of the Political Studies Association Sport and Politics Special Group

On 23 March Professor Sue Arrowsmith KC (Hon) presented an overview of her research on sport procurement to the 14th Annual Conference of the Political Studies Association Sport and Politics Special Group. This multidisciplinary event was hosted by Manchester Metropolitan University at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester on 23-24 March 2020 and attended by academics working on sport policy issues from around the world. The event and presentation had originally been scheduled for March 2020, but was postponed several times because of the pandemic to allow all participants to attend in person.

Professor Arrowsmith’s presentation, “Procurement in sport: mapping the field”, was delivered as part of a broad session son current trends in sport policy. Her paper set out the different factual contexts in which procurement is relevant in sport, the regulatory contexts that affect its operation in those various contexts, and its connection with current topical issues such as promoting integrity, addressing working conditions and using major events to develop local economies. It also emphasised the importance of a multidisciplinary approach when addressing this subject.

The paper was based on work done for her publication “Procurement and Sport Organizations”, published as a chapter in T. Slack, T. Byers and A. Thurston, Understanding Sport Organizations: Applications for Sport Managers (3rd 2020; Human Kinetics).
