School of Law Success in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024

The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings for Law 2024 were published on 26 October 2023.

We are delighted that the School of Law is 45th in the World and 6th among Law Schools in England and Wales in those rankings, which are based upon the following criteria (with weightings in brackets).

  • Teaching: the learning environment (32.2%)
  • Research environment: volume, income and reputation (29.8%)
  • Research quality: strength, influence and excellence (25%)
  • International outlook: staff, students and research (9%)
  • Industry: income and patents (4%)

Two criteria determine eligibility for the THE subject rankings: a publication threshold by discipline and an academic staff threshold. In the case of Law, the publication threshold is 100 papers published in the discipline over a five-year period. The academic staff threshold requires the institution to have at least 1% of its academic staff, or at least 20 academic staff, in the discipline. Most of the world’s leading law schools are therefore eligible.

The top 10 Law Schools in England and Wales on these measures looks like this:

  1. Cambridge
  2. Oxford
  3. UCL
  4. LSE
  5. KCL
  6. Nottingham
  7. Essex
  8. Queen Mary
  9. Leeds
  10. Durham

Professor Jeremy Gregory, Interim Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Social Sciences, said:

“I am absolutely delighted that the School of Law has done so well in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. It is particularly pleasing that those rankings are heavily focused heavily upon teaching and research, two of the university’s prime functions and areas in which I know the school takes great pride.”
