Lord Charles Pelham Pelham-Clinton (1813-1894; M.P. and nobleman)

<< Back to full list of biographies

Lord Charles was the second son of the 4th Duke of Newcastle under Lyne. He was educated at Eton and then Oxford, and served in the 1st Life Guards for 18 years.

In 1835, Lord Charles took his first steps towards a political career, unsuccessfully contesting the seat for East Retford, Nottinghamshire. This set back apparently put his political aspirations on hold for a period. His next electoral foray was not until 1847 when he contested the seat for Sandwich, Kent - again unsuccessfully.

In 1852, however, he was elected Conservative M.P. for Sandwich, and continued to hold the seat until his political retirement in 1857.
